The head of the Red Bull design bureau, Adrian Newey, expressed doubts about the feasibility of the general desire to convert cars to electric power and combat carbon dioxide emissions.
Newey recognized that environmental issues were extremely important. But at the same time, the methods that people use in this context - including in Formula 1-raise huge questions for him:
Of course, Formula 1 can and should play its role in resolving these issues. But then we come to all these discussions about what the source of this energy should be. What should it be - electricity, biofuels, synthetic fuels, hydrogen? In this matter we are dealing with a huge amount of misinformation, especially when it comes to the issue of electrical energy.
People are starting to realize that the carbon dioxide emissions from producing electric vehicles are much higher than those from producing a gasoline-powered car. And all the assumptions that electricity from wind and solar do not lead to any emissions are simply wrong.
Wind turbines require a colossal amount of concrete to build, and this in itself is one of the main sources of CO2. These structures also contain large amounts of copper and aluminum, and during production they release a very large amount of substances harmful to the environment. So there is no talk of any zero emissions in this case.
Newey added that problems also exist in the context of Formula 1. For example, current fireballs, despite the use of hybrid technologies, emit more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere simply by increasing the weight of the entire structure:
For some reason, no one talks about the amount of energy required for these cars to move at all. Just as national governments influence car manufacturers, something similar is happening in Formula 1. And some changes in F1 were lobbied for.
In my opinion, Formula 1 needs cars that are smaller, lighter, and more efficient in terms of energy consumption. Our cars are becoming larger and heavier, while losing aerodynamic efficiency. So, with the new rules, F1, unfortunately, achieved the exact opposite result.
It is also clear that F1, and the entire automotive industry as a whole, is unfortunately obsessed with size. And whether the car runs on gasoline or batteries is the wrong question.
The bigger problem is how much energy you need to actually move the damn thing. And it doesn`t matter from what source you receive this energy. It seems that this factor was not taken into account when drawing up the F1 technical rules. After all, of course, large automakers do not want this. At least that`s what it seems to me.
