The author of the book spent a year and a half in Mercedes, communicating, among other things, with the seven-time world champion.
Shortly after the announcement [of the move to Ferrari] there was a run-in of the W15 at Silverstone. This was the first chance for almost the entire team to see Lewis. For 30 seconds the atmosphere was strange, but as soon as he jumped into the car, everything went as usual. People reconciled themselves and probably understood the reasons - very simple ones, in fact.
I asked him directly what happened and he replied: It`s every kid`s dream who races to drive for Ferrari, that`s all. When I retire from my career, I don`t want to look back and think: What if?
He says he knows when he will retire. He has a very clear plan. He said that the journey with Mercedes and all these victories are very important to him. But this is the only thing he didn`t do, and he just thought: I don`t want to leave and think: It`s a pity that I didn`t do this.
The team means a lot to him - all his engineers, Bono (race engineer Peter Bonnington - Sports``), the whole team. Every year he takes them to paintball, just to bond before the season, and everything was ready for paintball. He told me that he arrived, saw all of them and could not get out of the car for 20 minutes. He was just stuck thinking: What am I going to tell them after all this time together? He is very human. I don`t think it was a mechanical decision.
I know Lewis may seem very focused and it was a calculated decision, but he is human, he knows there will be consequences, including on friendships - that`s what he worried about the most. After talking with my colleagues, I think everyone understood. This is a Ferrari, and this is a guy who has done everything - but never done anything like this before, " Wyman said.
